FAQ's

What is included with the Residential High-Speed Internet service?

The monthly service cost includes the following:

  • Unlimited 24-hour-a-day access
  • 5 separate e-mail addresses
  • 5 MB of web page storage space to accommodate your own personal web pages per account (per email address) for a total of 25 MB.
  • FREE technical support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  • How can I get cable from the TV in my living room to the PC in my bedroom?

Since the data signal and the television signal travel on the same physical cable, a simple cable splitter will be needed to provide multiple connections. However, due to the potential of introducing noise to the system, a cable technician will perform the installation of the splitter and cable outlet in the secondary location. If user-installed splitters or cabling are present, the technician will perform quality assurance tests before deeming the service operational.

Can I watch TV and use High-Speed Internet at the same time?

Yes. Neither television nor High-Speed Internet signals are affected by simultaneous use.

Is High-Speed Cable Internet access the same thing as ‘WebTV?'

No. The WebTV product relies on the use of an analog modem to connect you to the Internet while your television acts as a large monitor for viewing the text and graphics. Most existing television screens will not provide the resolution clarity of a computer monitor. WebTV is primarily designed for those who do not own a computer.

Can I use High-Speed Cable Internet access with my television?

No. High-Speed Cable Internet access is designed to be used only with your computer. Your computer must also be equipped with an Ethernet card which is included during the installation process. The essentiality of an Ethernet card will be discussed later in this document.

Is High-Speed Internet Cable available in my area?

Picriverisp.net currently offers High-Speed Cable Internet Access in Heron Bay only.

Are there plans to expand High-Speed Cable Internet to other areas?

Absolutely! In the coming months, Pic River Development Corporation (Picriverisp.net) plans to introduce this exciting new technology to neighbouring towns. Please stay-tuned to this web page for upcoming announcements!

Do I still use my analog modem to connect to the Internet?

All high-speed Internet information is sent and received entirely via your cable line, with the help of your Cable modem.

How does the Cable Modem work?

Cable modems are very different from the standard analog modems that we are so accustomed to. Cable modems operate, as their name suggests, by MOdulating and DEModulating Cable transmission signals. However, they are much more complex than a standard analog modem in that they are part router, part bridge and part tuner. Cable Modems also act as an Ethernet hub. Picriverisp.net's state-of-the-art headend unit, specially equipped with servers, monitors and transmitters, receives the transmission of high-bandwidth data from the Internet, through Bell Global's fiber optic Network. The data packets flow into Picriverisp.net's servers, and are then transferred through Cable to the customer's home. The customer's cable modem receives the high-speed transmission, and the Ethernet card translates the data to your computer.

OK, what kind of modem or other hardware do I need for this service?

We provide our customers with an internal 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet card which is included and installed for you during installation. You will also receive a Cable Modem enabling you to send and receive information entirely via cable. Additionally, customers will receive a cable line 'splitter' included in the installation. The cable splitter is a small metal device used to divert the cable line into two directions, allowing you to watch television and surf the Internet simultaneously.

    Who makes the Cable Modems?

Picriverisp.net has teamed-up with a major supplier of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. products to utilize Samsung's state of the art products.

What's the difference between "kilobits" and "kilobytes"?

There are 8 kilobits for every 1 kilobyte. Modem speed is measured this way, so for example, if your browser indicates that you are downloading at 50k (kilobytes per second) you are achieving 400k (kilobits per second).

How does High-Speed Cable Internet access compare to the new 56K modems?

K56 and x2 modems upload at 28.8k and download at an average of 53k (24k in Heron Bay), so their speeds fall dramatically short of our High-Speed Cable Internet service which can upload at rates up to 256k and download at speeds up to 512k.

Can I buy my Cable Modem instead of leasing it?

Cable modem technology is the result of years of testing and research by only a few high-tech companies. These Cable modems are distributed to Picriverisp.net and are available for purchase as well as for lease to High-Speed Cable Internet customers. For the latest prices contact Picriverisp.net.

How is High-Speed Cable Internet installed?

Installation is a very thorough process. On installation day, a Picriverisp.net technician (DaVeDoTcOm) will visit at the customer's home to verify the integrity of the cable lines, adding or moving line as necessary. Then they will install the cable splitter and test the Cable Modem with the line itself. Moments later, the technician will install an Ethernet card in your computer as well as setup the Internet browser and configure your email. The Cable Modem will then be tested to make certain that the Internet connection is working properly.

Can I operate my own mail server or web server?

These options are not available with our Residential High-Speed Cable Internet package but are available with our SOHO and Professional Service Level Commercial Packages.

How does the Cable modem connect to my computer?

In Heron Bay the Cable Modem is connected externally. The coaxial cable in your home runs from the wall and attaches to the Cable Modem (just like a television or VCR). The Ethernet cable from your computer is also attached to the Cable Modem with an RJ45 built-in plug.

How will this affect the cable line connected to my television?

On the day of installation, a Picriverisp.net Cable technician will add a splitter to your cable line so that one line will serve your television and the other line will bring the Internet to your computer. Using this method, both your television and your computer can operate simultaneously, if you wish. You see, the television signals and the Internet information both share the same cable, running at different frequencies. This will not adversely affect the qualify of either the television transmission or the functionality of your computer.

Will installing High Speed Internet have any harmful effects on my computer or any of my programs?

There are no known harmful effects on computers or their existing programs after installing High Speed Internet Cable Modems. If you encounter any technical problems, please call Picriverisp.net's Technical Support hotline at 1-807-229-8983. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays.

What kind of Ethernet card will I need for the High Speed Internet Service?

A 10BASE-T Ethernet card is recommended. In fact, a 10BASE-T Ethernet card is included in each installation.

What is the charge for installation?

The charge for installation includes a cable splitter, a 10BASE-T Ethernet card, Software Configuration, the connection of the High-Speed Cable Modem, and on-site technical assistance from Picriverisp.net during the procedure. Total installation cost is approximately $100.00 dollars.

    How am I billed?

Effective April 1st, 2002, Pic River ISP (PRDC) will discontinue sending monthly bills through the mail and will only accept the following payment options:

  • Online Banking (PC Banking, Web Banking)
  • Telephone Banking
  • Direct Payment at the to Bank cashier/teller or Instant teller machines (ATM)
  • Preauthorized Payment

Options 1, 2 and 3 will only be available to those customers whose banks accept PRDC Internet payments, namely TD Bank and Scotia Bank. It is our recommendation that all customers enrol in the pre-authorized payment plan. This initiative has been undertaken to ensure that we continue to bring you affordable pricing in Heron Bay and streamline our billing operations in tune with our planned expansion to the region.

Pre-authorized payment allows you to have your monthly bill automatically debited from any bank account of your choice. No misplaced invoices, return envelopes, or trips out to purchase stamps in the winter. Pre-authorized payment will also eliminate the chance of missing a payment, incurring a late payment fee or a reconnection fee. Everything is done automatically by our staff.

We would like to emphasize at this time that there is no charge to convert to pre-authorized payment; in fact it saves you time and postage each and every month. These changes do not apply to Cable Department.

At the request of the customer, monthly statements from the Internet Billing Department can be emailed to the customer. Please send an email to the Internet Billing Department to activate this freely provided service.
